Demineralization is a process that uses ion exchange to remove nearly all mineral salts and other dissolved ionic solids from water. These dissolved salts, which break down into positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions), can cause significant issues like scaling and corrosion in industrial equipment. Our DM plants are engineered to produce high-purity water, essential for sensitive applications.

 

The DM Plant Process

 

The core of a DM plant lies in its series of resin beds. As water passes through these resins, a chemical reaction occurs where the impurity ions are “exchanged” with hydrogen () and hydroxyl () ions from the resin beads. The and then combine to form a pure water molecule ().

We offer two primary types of DM plants to meet varying purity requirements:

  • Two-Bed DM Plants: This system uses separate vessels for the cation and anion exchange resins. Water first passes through the cation bed, which removes positive ions, then through the anion bed, which removes negative ions. This is a cost-effective solution for a variety of industrial needs.

  • Mixed-Bed DM Plants: In this system, both the cation and anion resins are mixed together in a single vessel. This arrangement provides an almost infinite number of exchange opportunities, resulting in ultra-pure water with very low conductivity. Mixed-bed plants are often used as a final “polishing” step after a two-bed system or for applications that demand the highest level of purity.

It’s important to note that while DM plants effectively remove ionic constituents (electrolytes like calcium, magnesium, and sodium), they are not designed to remove non-ionic contaminants such as micro-organisms or some organic compounds. For these contaminants, additional treatment processes like UV disinfection or activated carbon filtration may be required.
